A BRIEF HISTORY OF STORY MEMORIAL PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

Our church was started July 22, 1934, under the name of West Marion Presbyterian Church. Twenty people met in the West Marion Elementary School for several months under the guidance of Reverend J.C. Story. The church was officially organized on December 16, 1934, and work soon started on a church building with help from many friends. In 1944, the name was changed to Story Memorial Presbyterian Church, and the church was dedicated in 1946. The WIC (Women in the Church) was organized in 1951. In 1953, ground was broken for the minister's home. The educational wing of the church building was completed in 1961.

On June 24, 1973, we separated from the Presbyterian Church of the United States and became associated with the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA). Filling a need for a larger sanctuary due to increased membership, a new sanctuary was completed in 1987 and the original sanctuary was made the Fellowship Hall. In 1984 the church offices were opened in the house across from the minister's home. A house beside the church offices and across from the Fellowhip Hall was purchased in 1995 and after remodeling became the Jim Goble Mission House where missionaries can stay free of charge while on home mission assignment.
