SENEGAL REPORT #5

When God Smiles On Your Plans

It was 2001. Jose and France-Lise Oliveira had taken the Story Memorial mission team down a express-wide dirt street not far from the MIS headquarters. After we stopped Jose pulled out a set of architect's plans and put them on the hood of one of the cars.

He told us that here is where the hospital would be. Then there was just an empty lot. But because God smiled on these plans, today there is a four-story modern Christian hospital in Thies - The Barthimee Medical Center! Praise God!

I remember walking around the four-story shell that the hospital was in 2003 and Jose saying that here will be a patient's room; here will be the maternity section; here will be the operating room, etc.

Tuesday I walked in those same places and I heard Jose saying that here IS a patient's room; here IS the maternity section; here IS the operating room, etc. He took me around to different areas to take photos and video of the wonderful work being done at Barthimee Medical Center. Here is a sample...

There is a complete dental department with state of the art equipment. Poor nutrition and water, found especially in the villages, contribute to dental problems for the Senegalese.

A sick child is treated in the pediatric wing. The cost of treatment is subsidized by contributions to MIS.

There is much effort in acquiring the latest lab equipment so that the medical staff will have the most accurate information to make treatment decisions.

Having a central location to obtain needed drugs is critical for a city of nearly a half-million like Thies. Add to that those who travel from the outlying villages for medical treatment and the need for a well stocked pharmacy is easy to see.

The Barthimee Medical Center has a new elevator. What makes this newsworthy is that it is the first elevatory in Thies! Try to imagine what it would be like to go on an elevator for the first time. That will be the experience for a number of people who use the elevator at the hospital.

Both a praise and a reason to pray are the high quality doctors like Dr. Adamson who are practicing at the hospital. Praise that the Lord has led them to the MIS hospital and prayer that more doctors will come.

There is a great need for Barthimee Medical Center and it shows everyday in the number of people in the waiting area for patients. Bartimee Medical Center is named for the blind man that Jesus healed in Mark 10: 46-52. Just as this man cried out for healing so do many here in Senegal. Please keep Mission Inner Senegal and the hospital at Thies in your prayers!

Bye for now...
